Portfolio Evaluation

Part One
Josh Birnbaum

1. This portfolio has a lot of different subjects. It has sports photography, some street photography, and some other random things.

2.  a. The judges seemed to criticize the photographer for having two photo stories with wheelchairs.
     b. The judges didn't like most of the first wheelchair story, the photos did not get them emotionally invested.
     c. The judges seemed just unimpressed with the entire portfolio.

3.
     a. The judges liked the second wheelchair story, it had a lot more emotion to it.
     b. The judges seemed to like the optimistic photos the best.

4.  I thought the photographer was pretty average. For a lot of his work, he seemed like he wasn't trying to tell that deep of a story for a lot of it.

Justin Mott

1. The subject seems to be just the lives of people from poorer countries like Cambodia and Vietnam.

2. a. The judges seemed to think a lot of the photos that meddled with the focus seemed to flop.
    b. The judges wanted a bit more story from the photos in general.
    c. Some of the photos just had too much space.

3.
a. The judges thought the graphics in the portfolio were good.
b. The judges thought the photographer did a good job capturing emotion.

4. I liked a lot of this guy's photos. Most of them were visually intriguing.

Anthony Souffle

1. This photographer had a lot of different subjects. He had sports, people just living their lives, and some other things.

2. a. The judges didn't like the fact that the photographer did not show the bird being caught in the photo story.
    b. The judges seemed to think the photos were just average.
    c. The judges did not seem very impressed in general.

3. a. The judges appreciated the photo story presented.
    b. There were some photos the judges liked, for example, the funeral picture.

Dustin Snipes

1. The judges liked the fact that most of the photos were visually strong and were unique from each other.
2.The photographer seemed to be in the action when it was required. One weakness is that the photographer used the same angle on a few of the photos and the judges noticed that.

The process

1. Their process of picking the best photo was very confusing if I'm being honest. They all just yelled for a few minutes and then decided this guy's was the best because it had 15 solid photos. I'd like to add that these judges are just terrible. They don't seem like they enjoy critiquing the photos at all.

Part Two

Not agreed
1. There's a photo that shows an ariel perspective of two martial artists starting a match. The judge says that the photographer could've done more with the photo. The judge does not explain what. I disagree with the judge. I think the photo is solid.

Agreed
1. There's a photo that shows a diver in a warmup pool. The diver is completely submerged and the photo is from an ariel perspective so the viewer sees the entire pool as well. I agree with the judges that the photo has lots of cool shapes.
