Varsity cheerleaders prepare for national competition

The Bowie varsity cheerleaders have made into the UCA High School Competition in Orlando, Florida. This means they will have to work hard and overcome challenges along the way. Even though going to this competition is a big deal, the most important thing to do is come together as a family.

Photos
A8- On the beam

This photo is the most excellent, and well taken photo at the Lone Star Dispatch to date. Just kidding. It's not a bad photo, but it's not the best either. Theres a bit of motion blur on the photo so that doesn't look too great.

I don't see evidence of following the rules of photography.
The main subject is Kate Stubbs.
The photo is exposed to the right amount.

A1- Pumping up the crowd

In this photo, a cheerleader is the main subject. Other cheerleaders are in the background with her. The photo is good and doesn't really have many flaws. It's exposed well and follows rule of thirds and lines.

B1- Close Connection

In this photo a girl and her horse are bonding in this photo. It is a bit overexposed in my opinion, but is still a fine photo. The photo isn't really following many rules of photography except for maybe simplicity.

B4- Plan of action

In this photo, theres a group of students in a little group. That's really it. The photo is pretty bland and doesn't add anything to the story. Fabulous job.

B8- Starting young

In this photo, a boy holds a poster his  parents made for him. I feel like this a common problem with newspaper photography. I realize that people are trying to capture the moments that matter and not art, but it would certainly help if the photos were less bland. Don't get me wrong the photo is exposed well and gets things right, but the photos are so painfully average.

My favorite photo was Saddling Up. I like the photo because horses just look so goofy up close. They're funny to look at. There's not an incredible amount of photo composition, but I just like the way horses look.

My least favorite photo was Plan of action. When you look at the photo, you can tell that almost 0 effort was put into it. The photographer probably just stood awkwardly in the back of the room and zoomed in all the way so they wouldn't have to get too close.

If I was a photographer for this paper, I would like to do the yo yo boy story. I feel like that would be a fun shoot to go on. Just a boy and his trusty yo yo.

I would say the photography is pretty weak. There is not a lot of photos that make me say "wow". Nothing really stands out and that's kind of sad.

Intro to newspaper design

Intro to newspaper design

1.  The Press-Sun Bulletin was my favorite one.

2. The headlines weren't great, but one of the stories had a cool magazine feel to it and it was about police chases.

3. The favorite story was the one about police chases.

4. Most of the front pages had a main photo and the beginning of the story on the front page and had a dominate photo to go with it.

5. Most of the papers also had different layouts for their front pages. Some had their main story dominating the entire page while others had many different photos to spice things up.

The Lone Star dispatch looks like a legitimate newspaper. It follows the rules of newspaper design. It has simple and easy to read text. The photos mostly pair up nicely with the stories and captions and is overall a good paper.

Website Review

The website LENS is a photography focused subsection of The New York Times that tackles the news in a visual manner. The website has individual stories that are joined by photos, and they have something a lot of news sites have these days, a “The Week in Pictures”. It’s exactly what it sounds like. It has current events with photos to accompany it. These stories also have short summaries of what is happening in the photos. I personally read the news, but I know a lot of people who do not. I feel this website could be very useful for people who are not as informed about the outside world. LENS dives into a lot of different topics including politics, science, current events, and a bunch of other stuff. LENS is a blog and that might turn some people off. It seems like a trustworthy site. It is owned by The New York Times so I can personally trust it. The current event stories seem to be up to date, and the opinion pieces are interesting. I personally will not be using this website in the future. I don’t have much a use for it. I already get my news from multiple other sources and I don’t need this site. However, I would recommend the site. It has intriguing photos, which a lot of news sites lack. The stories are also interesting and I would read them if I didn’t already have a news source. That’s what I think about LENS.

I would give this website a 4 out of 5. I think the stories are a bit lacking, but it does an ok job.
I chose to show this photo because it shows that news can have both informative stories and interesting photos. The photo here is very well shot and looks like art and journalism at the same time. I think this is what journalists should strive for, but I know that will not happen all the time. LENS does a good job of captivating people with excellent photos and then providing information that is useful.  Sometimes LENS will completely focus on the photos and the art of taking photos. I think this is where LENS shines.  The LENS site shows better photos than stories. When they focus on the photos, it’s much more engaging to view. I’m not saying that LENS is bad at telling stories; I’m just saying they tell better stories with images. Overall, LENS is a good site to look at if you want a basic understanding of the happenings of our world.
